Highlights from the Profile on Francophone Youth in Ontario
Demography
- There are 134,595 Francophones under the age of 25 years in Ontario; they represent 3.6% of the general population of young people in Ontario; and
- Between 1996 and 2001, the proportion of Francophone youth increased in Central Ontario (from 17.6% to 20.6%), Eastern Ontario (45.4% to 46.2%), and Southwestern Ontario (3.8% to 4.3%). However, it decreased in Northeastern Ontario (31.8% down to 27.6%). It remained unchanged in Northwestern Ontario (at 1.3%).
Preservation of Mother Tongue
- Between 1996 and 2001, there was a decline in the preservation of French among Francophone youth of all ages.
Levels of Education
- In Ontario, 88.3% of Francophones between the ages of 20 years and 24 years have at least a high school diploma, compared to 86.1% of their counterparts in the general population. The percentage of Francophone youth who finish high school is higher than the percentage of youth in the general population and this is true for every region of the province;
- The percentage of Francophones between the ages of 20 years and 24 years who have a university degree is comparable to that for this age group in general (12.4% compared to 12.6%); and
- More young Francophone women than men graduate from university (15.6% compared to 9.0%).
Labour Market and Income
- The average employment income of Francophones between the ages of 20 years and 24 years is higher than that of their counterparts in the general population ($15,541 compared to $14,231). This is true for both sexes.
