Highlights from the Profile on Francophone Women in Ontario
Demography and Family Situation
- Francophone women in Ontario number 281,375; they represent 52.7% of the province's total Francophone population. The highest concentrations of Francophone women are found in Central Ontario and Southwestern Ontario (53.8% and 53.6%). Northwestern Ontario has the lowest concentration of Francophone women (48.3%);
- The percentage of families that are single-parent families is distinctly lower among Francophones than in the general population 18.2% compared to 23.4%); and
- Francophone mothers play a central role in the preservation of the French language.
Levels of Education / Fields of Study
- A higher percentage of Francophone women have a high school diploma / university degree than Francophone men (68.0% compared to 65.0% / 15.1% compared to 14.2%); and
- Compared to women in general, Francophone women are over-represented in the field of education (17.8% compared to 14.1%) and literature and the humanities (8.9% compared to 8.0%). They are under-represented in the field of health (16.3% compared to 18.0%).
Labour Market and Income
- The activity rate for Francophone women in the workplace is lower than that of the female population as a whole (59.2% compared to 61.5%);
- However, the unemployment rate for Francophone women is lower that that for the female population as a whole (5.7% compared to 6.5%); and
- The average employment income of Francophone women is higher than that of their counterparts in the general population ($28,731 compared to $26,894). The average employment income of Francophone women represents 67.5% of the average employment income of Francophone men.
