Highlights from the Profile on Francophone Seniors in Ontario
Demography and Family Situation
- Ontario Francophones 65 years of age and over number 76,925; they represent
- 5.6% of this age group in the general population; and
- Francophone women 65 years and over represent 58.1% of this age group in the Francophone population. The representation of women is even higher among Francophones 75 years and over (63.3%).
Socio-economic Profile
In terms of their social and economic standing, Francophone seniors do not fare as well as the province's elderly population as a whole. As is true for the elderly population in general, there are major differences between elderly Francophone men and women.
- Francophone seniors tend to be less well-educated;
- The activity rate for Francophone seniors is lower than that for seniors in the
- general population in every region of the province. As is true for the elderly
- population in general, the activity rate for elderly Francophone women is distinctly lower than that for elderly Francophone men (4.3% compared to 10.5%);
- The average total income of Francophone seniors is lower than that for the general population aged 65 years and over, and this is the case for both sexes; and
- Similarly, the percentage of Francophone seniors living below the low income cutoff is higher than in the province's elderly population as a whole (17.8% compared to 14.6%). The percentage of elderly Francophone women who live below the low income cut-off is twice as high as that for elderly Francophone men (22.8% compared to 10.8%).
