Statistical Profile of the Francophone Community in Ontario
No 4 – June 2000
INCOME
This profile is based on Statistics Canada's 1996 Census.
EMPLOYMENT INCOME
Definition: Employment income refers to total income received
by persons 15 years of age and over as wages and salaries, net income
from a non-farm unincorporated business and/or professional practice
and net farm self-employment income.
Average Employment Income
- The average income of Francophones is higher than that of the
general population ($29,527 compared to $28,838). This is true
for both men and women. The average employment income of Francophone
men is higher than that of male Ontarians in general ($35,002
compared to $34,726). Also, the average employment income of
Francophone women is higher than that of women in the general
population ($23,710 compared to $22,188).
The "wage gap" between men and women is narrower for Francophones
- The average employment income of Francophone women is 68% of the
average income of Francophone men ($23,710 compared to
$35,002). A similar correlation can be made between both genders
in the population in general, since the average employment income of
women in Ontario is 64% of the average employment income of men
($22,188 compared to $34,726).
- The 45 to 64 years old Francophone group is the one with the
highest average employment income ($36,072). The average
employment income of Francophones is slightly higher in the less than
35 age group than in the population in general, the wider gap being
in the 25 to 34 age group ($27,988 compared to $26,824). The
reverse holds true in the 35 and older age group. Francophones in
those age groups have an average employment income lower than that of
the province as a whole.
- The Central region has the highest average employment income
($33,010).
- Compared to the general population, the average employment
income of Francophones is higher than that of the population
elsewhere in the province, the widest gap being in the South-West
($30,586 compared to $26,457).
TOTAL INCOME
Definition: Total income refers to the total money received by
an individual from all sources including total wages and salaries,
net income from an unincorporated non-farm business and/or
professional practice, net farm self-employment income, government
transfer payments, investment income, retirement pensions,
superannuation and annuities and other money income. This refers to
people 15 years and over.
Average Income
- Based on the 1996 Census data, the total average individual
income is lower for Francophones than for the general population
($27,044 compared to $27,309). The total average income of
Francophone men is lower than that of male Ontarians overall
($32,915 compared to $33,599). However, the opposite is true
for females. The average income of Francophone women is higher than
that of female Ontarians overall ($21,509 compared to
$21,048).
- The total average income of Francophone women is 65% of the
average income of Francophone men ($21,509 compared to
$32,915). A similar observation can be made with respect to the
wage gap between both sexes in the general population. The total
average income of Ontario's women is 63% of the total average income
of men ($21,048 compared to $33,599).
- Francophones in the 35 to 44 age group have the highest total
average income ($33,812). Francophones aged less than 35 years
old have a total average income higher than that of the general
population, the widest gap being in the 25 to 34 age group
($27,539 compared to $26,308). The reverse holds true in the
35 and over age group. Francophones in this age group have a total
average income lower than found in the province overall.
- The total average income of Francophones is highest in Central
Ontario ($29,828). The total average income of Francophones is
higher than that of the income of the general population in the
Central ($29,828 compared to $27,862), the South-West
($27,407 compared to $25,940) and the North-West ($28,842
compared to $25,990) areas of the province. In Eastern and
Northeastern Ontario, the total average income is lower than that of
the general population.
