Volunteering in French in Ontarioand Volunteer Recognition Programs of the Government of OntarioOver 2.3 million Ontarians help build solid and prosperous communities through volunteerism. In fact, not-for-profit organizations are among the most important economic sectors in Ontario. In light of the contribution made by volunteers and not-for-profit organizations to our economic vitality and social well-being, the Government of Ontario supports a certain number of initiatives intended to promote volunteer activities in the province. The Office of Francophone Affairs has compiled a list of resources in French that are available in Ontario to assist organizations recruiting Francophone volunteers and individuals willing to give their time as volunteers. You will also find a list of volunteer recognition programs administered by the Government of Ontario. The Office of Francophone Affairs encourages the Francophone community to submit the names of people working in the volunteer sector in French who would be eligible to receive one or more of the awards offered by the Government of Ontario. Volunteer Canada is the national volunteer centre, whose mandate is to facilitate and reinforce the work of volunteer centres, volunteer organizations and volunteers. The organization includes over 200 volunteer centres across Canada among its members. A list of all the volunteer centres in Canada is posted on Volunteer Canada Web site.

The Knowledge Development Centre funds community-based and national research projects to build the body of knowledge on volunteers and volunteerism in Canada. Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat ONTARIO VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARDSThe Ontario Volunteer Service Awards are given to individuals who have provided consecutive years of volunteer service to an organization in Ontario. Youth volunteers (under the age of 24) are recognized for two or moreyears of continuous service. Adults are recognized for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 or more years of continuous service. During ceremonies held across the province, the recipients are presented with a stylized trillium pin and a personalized certificate. OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS FOR VOLUNTARISM IN ONTARIOThe Outstanding Achievement Awards for Voluntarism in Ontario are presented to individuals and groups who have made lasting and meaningful contributions to their communities in the area of voluntarism. Up to 20 recipients are selected annually by an independent selection committee. THE ONTARIO MEDAL FOR GOOD CITIZENSHIPThe Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship awards individuals who, through their exceptional and continuous efforts, have contributed in a remarkable way to the well-being of their communities. These individuals must provide their services on a volunteer basis. Any person or organization can nominate an individual by completing the nomination form. The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario presents recipients with a medal at a ceremony held in the Provincial Legislature. THE ONTARIO MEDAL FOR YOUNG VOLUNTEERSThe Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers is presented to young people between the ages of 15 and 24, who have demonstrated leadership, initiative, perseverance and originality in contributing to their communities through volunteerism. The medals are presented by the Lieutenant Governor at a ceremony held in the Provincial Legislature. THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR'S COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER AWARD FOR STUDENTSThe Lieutenant Governor's Community Volunteer Award for Students recognizes an exemplary volunteer among the graduating students of each of Ontario's approximately 1,100 secondary schools. It pays tribute to those students who have not only completed the number of volunteer hours required to graduate, but who go above and beyond. The school principal selects a student and submits his/her name to the Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat. The awards are sent to the participating schools, in the spring, at a school awards assembly or graduation ceremony. WORKSMARTONTARIOVolunteerism is a growing activity, especially for high school students who must complete 40 hours of volunteer work before graduation. Volunteers are not covered by the Employment Standards Act, 2000 and may not be covered by the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act, 1997 (WSIA). The Occupational Health and Safety Act provides protection for persons in the workplace who receive money for their work. Employers still have some responsibility for the health and safety of persons visiting or helping out in their workplaces.
