The Minister
The Honourable Madeleine MeilleurMinister of Community and Social Services After more than a decade in municipal politics, Madeleine Meilleur was elected to the Ontario legislature in 2003 and re-elected in 2007. She has served as Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs since 2003. In this role, she introduced amendments to the French Language Services Act, which established the Office of the French Language Services Commissioner. As Minister of Culture (2003-2006), she oversaw the passing of the Ontario Heritage Act, and as Minister of Community and Social Services and Minister Responsible for Ontarians with Disabilities (2006-2007), she contributed to the development of the Ontario Child Benefit Program. Meilleur is a registered nurse and lawyer specializing in labour and employment law. Before being elected to the Ontario legislature, she led efforts to keep the Montfort Hospital open. She has also helped the Ottawa-Carleton Children's Aid Society, the Vanier Housing Corporation, the Cité Collégiale and the Maison de l'amitié, a facility assisting female victims of violence. She is the recipient of several awards, including the United Way's 2001 Community Builder Award and, in 2002, the Prix d'Excellence given by the Réseau socio-action des femmes francophones for her dedication to the community.
