McGuinty Government Increases Opportunities
for the Francophone Community
TORONTO – To mark the 20th anniversary of the French Language Services Act and reaffirm its commitment to Ontario's Francophone community, the Government of Ontario has increased funding for Francophone Affairs by 13 per cent, Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs Madeleine Meilleur announced today.
"The government is committed to reinforcing the progress of the Francophone community while ensuring its continuing advancement in the future," added Meilleur. "Thanks to new resources, the Office of Francophone Affairs will have additional means to promote French-language services and to implement proactive strategies for the development of Francophone Affairs."
The government has provided an additional $500,000 to the operational budget for the Office of Francophone Affairs. This important announcement complements others made yesterday in the Ontario budget, including those about education, postsecondary education and student aid programs and funding of the public libraries network, which also benefit Ontario Francophones.
2006 is a momentous year for French-language services. In partnership with several other ministries, the Office of Francophone Affairs seizes this opportunity to launch a number of significant projects and initiatives to recognize and promote the exceptional contribution of Francophones to the prosperity of Ontario.
