Office Of Francophone Affairs Launches Travelling Exhibition
Ontario's Francophonie: Then And Now
OTTAWA – The McGuinty government is paying tribute to Ontario's francophonie by launching the travelling exhibition Ontario's Francophonie: Then and Now, Madeleine Meilleur, Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, announced today.
"This exhibition allows us to look at the past and reflect on the long journey travelled not only since the passage of the French Language Services Act in 1986, but also since the beginning of the great francophone adventure in Ontario," said Meilleur.
The travelling exhibition features a series of French and English panels that represent significant periods of Franco-Ontarian history. A bilingual poster and a brochure, in French and English, are also available. People can download these at www.ofa.gov.on.ca.
This exhibition was developed by the Office of Francophone Affairs, in collaboration with the Vanier Museopark. The Regroupement des organismes du patrimoine franco-ontarien (ROPFO) is responsible for coordinating the circulation of the travelling exhibition at cultural and community centres, schools, tourism events, seminars and conferences across the province.
"This initiative allows us to appreciate Ontario's rich francophone history at a glance," said Yves Frenette, historian and director of the Centre de recherche en civilisation canadienne-française (Centre for Research on French Canadian Culture). "Franco-Ontarian history is filled with big and small wins; it is an astounding story, still in progress."
"The 400-year-old Franco-Ontarian history continues to be written every day. Ontario's francophone community is a truly inspiring example of a strong, prosperous and engaged community that is both proud of its past and turned toward the future," said Meilleur.
