Call For Nominations for New Ontario Francophonie Awards

TORONTO – Nominations are being invited for the new Ontario Francophonie Awards, created by the government of Ontario to recognize the many people who have made valuable contributions to the advancement of the French language and culture in Ontario.

"Some Ontarians have done so much for the Francophonie in this province," said Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs Madeleine Meilleur. "They have inspired us all. I hope the community will send in a large number of nominations, because it is essential that we encourage and recognize them. This is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the Francophone community, and its rich contribution to the province's prosperity and diversity."

The Ontario Francophonie Awards were announced on March 20, 2006 as part of the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the French Language Services Act. The nomination period opens today, May 16, and continues until June 30, 2006. The awards will be presented at a special ceremony hosted by the government of Ontario on November 20, 2006.

The Ontario Francophonie Awards will honour both Francophones and Francophiles. They will showcase outstanding contributions to the political, social, economic and cultural vitality and well-being of the Francophone community.

Details about the nomination process and forms are available on the Office of Francophone Affairs' website at www.ofa.gov.on.ca or by calling the Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat at 416-314-7529.

"Every day, our Francophone community is more vibrant, versatile and dynamic, thanks to the generosity, conviction and creativity of dedicated Ontarians," added Meilleur. "The McGuinty government is committed to reinforcing the progress of the Francophone community."

Other Ontario government support for strong and healthy Francophone communities include:

  • Grants to seven Ontario French-language arts, theatre and culture groups from the Cultural Strategic Investment Fund
  • $15 million to enhance Francophone, rural, northern and First Nation libraries
  • Funding for Destination Nord de l'Ontario, which helps Francophone tour operators promote and grow their business
  • Establishing an advisory committee on French-language postsecondary programs.
  • Implementing an important program of celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the French Language Services Act.
