Ontario stressed the importance of Francophone media at recent hearings held by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

The province, represented by the Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, Madeleine Meilleur, supported the report by the Ministerial Conference on the Canadian Francophonie. The report reviewed English and French-language broadcasting services in linguistic minority communities.

The Minister stated the province's position that the renewal and evolution of Francophones in Ontario depends on the broad distribution of Francophone media. The province also emphasized the contribution of TFO to the spread of Francophone culture, as the only French-language educational public television network in Ontario

QUOTES

"The best way to boost Francophone minority communities is to provide them access to both the French language and culture," said Minister Meilleur. "The central role of the media makes them powerful allies."

"The support from the Ministerial Conference and the collaborative approach of the CRTC add to the voice of the Francophone who want greater access to French-language channels, said Claudette Paquin, CEO of TFO. These efforts are encouraging for French-language broadcasting services in Canada. "
